Migong District The “Maze District” is a common local nickname for ground-level Hong Kong proper, a reference to its urban sprawl and the same overcrowding issues which inspired the city to start building upwards. This is still most of the city, and the most populated section, comprising everything from crowded maze-like slums lit only by neon, the freeways and bullet trains and elevators which allow for simple navigation between the three levels, towering self-sustaining arcologies, sprawling metropolitan centers like New Kowloon and much of Hong Kong Island proper, the ritzy studios of Hong Kong’s booming entertainment industry, and most of the city’s government offices. Large sections of the city are commonly eclipsed by the districts far overhead, and there is a palpable sense of nervousness that one day the grand layered infrastructure will fail catastrophically, but all in all the city is flourishing for those who don’t fall through the cracks.
