[ NOTE: This is part one of a four part series, each part will be added onto this thread as a new post. Enjoy. ]
[ And for reference, this is from Ironsheep's point of view at the age of five. ]
The door was left open.
I don’t know why, but the door is open.
They told us not to move, me and the other kids here. Why didn’t they want us to leave? They’re saying the door’s stuck.
The man’s voice is quiet now, but no one’s going anywhere. The door’s open, why don’t they just go? I don’t like it here. They don’t let me go and do anything I like, I’m leaving.
It’s so white and clean out here, why haven’t I seen more of this place? Wait, I already answered that question. They don’t let me go and do my own thing.
There are people in white coats everywhere, some are men, some are women, some have glasses, others have wacky hair, but they don’t notice me. Maybe that’s for the best, they might try to take me back.
I walk for a while, I can see another door that’s open. Maybe the man had to go and fix more doors before he fixed ours? I’m not sure, but this one looks important. I’m going through this door.
Now there’s a big hallway, there’s some windows on the sides, but the people behind them aren’t paying attention. They’ve got silly round helmets on, and guns in their hands. Are they guarding the hallway? I don’t know, and I don’t care. I’m walking through this hallway.
They didn’t see me, maybe because I’m small, or maybe because they weren’t paying attention, or maybe they just didn’t care. I sure don’t.
The air tastes cleaner now, maybe that’s because I’m outside now. Margaret said she’d take me outside one day, but she got shouted at for saying that to me. She didn’t tell me we were going outside after she got shouted at. Something about ‘losing her job’.
The building is very big, it has some big chimneys sticking out the top and looks very metallic. I can hear someone yelling, almost sounds like a cry, a cry for help. From a very sad dog. I want to help, but I can’t. I don’t want to go back in there, I can’t help them.
The yelling gets quieter, quieter than it was before, but that’s because I’m walking away now. Walking away from the big white place. The air is so clean out here, I bet the other children would have liked it out here. But they didn’t leave when the door was open, too bad for them.
I feel like I might be lost, that same tree has shown up four times already. Am I going in circles? Or do these trees just look the same? I can’t tell, I don’t know trees. I like them though, they’re all tall and green, maybe I’ll be tall when I grow up? I don’t know, I can’t see the future.
My feet are starting to hurt, I feel like I should sit down, but they might come and catch me. Or maybe they don’t care, I’m not sure. I heard one of the white coat men talking to Margaret, I remember he said “We don’t care about what happens to them.” Maybe we were allowed to leave the whole time? I can’t tell.
My feet are really starting to hurt, I think I have a blister on my foot now, but I can’t stop walking, not until I’m far away. I think I might be getting far away now, there’s a big road. I remember Margaret telling me about roads, people drive cars on these, they usually lead to towns or cities. I should follow this road.
This road is big, big enough for lots of cars. Or maybe I’m just small, I haven’t seen a car myself, maybe this is supposed to be a busy road? Wait, no, there’s no one on it. Oh well. Speaking of cars, I think I can hear one. A far away ‘vrrrmmm’ sound. That’s the sound cars make, Margaret told me so.
It was definitely a car, I can see it now, but it’s moving slower. Now it’s stopping, there’s a man in the car wearing a nice looking shirt and has a cool hat, he kind of looks like a farmer, but he doesn’t have a beard or a pickup truck, maybe he’s just dressed up like a farmer.
He looks really concerned, he asks me; “Hey, lil’ guy, are you alright there?” I nodded, but I shook my head afterwards. I don’t like lying, and I wasn’t okay. My feet hurt and I don’t know where I am. He asks again. “Where did you come from? You look exhausted!” I didn’t know where I came from, so I thought I’d describe what I remember it looking like to the man.
“It was a big white place, lots of people in white coats, other kids my age who look weird or act weird. That’s where I came from.” I pointed in the general direction I came from, that might help a bit. He looked very surprised, he even had a hand over his mouth. He opened the passenger door.
“Come on, lad, get in the car, I’ll get you somewhere safe.” He said.
Was I not safe? Or was this what Margaret told me was a ‘kidnapping’. He didn’t seem like a criminal, he looked genuine and concerned. I couldn’t tell, but I got in anyway. He strapped the seatbelt on me, and the car began making the ‘vrrrmmmm’ sound again and started moving. He asked me again as we were moving. “Do you know where your parents are? They must be worried sick about you.” I shook my head. Margaret was like my mother, but she always told me she wasn’t. She told me my real parents were far away, not telling me where.
He looked at me surprised, “Are you sure, young man? Come now surely you know where your parents are.” I racked my brain, I tried to remember where they were, but all I could remember was the coat man saying to Margaret: “Stop getting his hopes up, his parents are gone.” The coat man thought I didn’t listen, jokes on him. I heard everything he told Margaret.
I told the nice man: “They’re gone, I think. The coat man said so.” He looked very sad now, all he said to me was: “I’m so, so sorry to hear that, young man.” Why was he sorry? Did he do something wrong? I knew that you said sorry to someone when you did something bad to them, but the nice man hadn’t done anything bad to me. So far he’s been very nice to me.
“Young man, what’s your name?” I knew my name, my last name as well, which I’m happy about. I thought I’d tell him both, maybe that might be helpful. “Garrel Ironai is my name.” I tell him, he has an earnest smile on his face. “Well, Garrel, it’s lovely to meet you. My name is Daniel.” Daniel was the nice man’s name. Finally, I could stop calling him the nice man.
Daniel drove us for a while, being very quiet. I wanted to talk a little more, but there wasn’t anything to talk about. He didn’t have the car radio on either, so it was very quiet. Very, very quiet. Aside of course from the ‘vrrrmmmm’ of the car. We were quiet for a while longer, before Daniel spoke to me again.
“Do you have anywhere to stay, Garrel? Any grandparents?” I shook my head. I didn’t know much outside of the white place, so I didn’t have anywhere else to stay. “Well, you can stay with me for now, Garrel. Would you be okay with that?” He asked, and I nodded. Daniel was nice, he was being so kind to me despite not knowing me. He didn’t even think my horns or my arms were weird, which was nice.
He seemed glad I said yes, I think he was relieved as well, since he sighed quite happily. I heard him murmur something under his breath, something about ‘meta-human’ and ‘poor guy’. He murmured a lot, but he was very quiet. Maybe he was making some mental notes? I heard the words ‘meta-human’ a lot in the white place, am I a meta-human? I don’t know, all I know is that I look like a sheep, I think at least, sheep are woolly and have horns, I’m woolly and have horns.
The sun was gone now, and the moon was in the sky, ‘night-time’ Margaret told me it was. She told me a lot, she was really nice. I hope she doesn’t ‘lose her job’ because I left, that’d be really sad. Daniel flicked a little thingy on the side of his steering wheel, and all of a sudden the road was alight, car lights, I think it was. We moved on the big road for a while longer, before I could see a town in the distance, but we turned right before we got to the town, and I saw a big, nice looking house. I think this is where Daniel lives.
We got out of his car after he stopped it in front of a big door, and he took me to the smaller door to get into his house. It was very nice in here, it didn’t look all sciency, it felt comfy and warm. I could see a dining table with six seats, a big sofa and what I think was a TV, and I think the kitchen was through that door to the left, this was all after he turned on the lights, by the way. I couldn’t see anything before he turned them on.
“Make yourself comfy, Garrel, I’ll make you something to eat. You must be starving.” Daniel said. He was right, I was very hungry. Walking past a lot of trees all day made me feel very hungry, and my feet were sore, so I made myself comfy on the big sofa. It was very soft, even softer than that hard bed I slept on at the white place, I liked Daniel’s house. It was nice in here.
I sat there a while humming to myself, thinking of what Daniel might be making, I could smell something very nice, and soon enough he came out of what I thought was the kitchen with two plates. It was something yellow and sort of half circle shaped, he set them on the dining table with a happy smile on his face.
“There, that’ll do! Don’t you think Garrel?” He said to me, laughing a little after he said it. I didn’t know what this was, but I was very hungry and this smelled very good. I stuck my fork into it and took a bite, it was so flavoursome! And delicious! And-and-and- I couldn’t believe it! I smiled a happy smile, and Daniel seemed happy that I was happy, and he asked me: “So, I guess that big grin means you like it?” I nodded quickly this was the best food I’d had ever, I didn’t know what this was so I asked him. “What is this Daniel? It’s amazing!”
He laughed when I asked this, I don’t know if I made a joke or not, I didn’t think it was funny at least. “It’s an omelette Garrel, it’s made using eggs.” Eggs! So that’s what it was, it made me feel so happy, but my smile kind of left when I continued, eating was weird when my face was different from usual. I finished it pretty quickly and I felt a lot better. Daniel made me dinner and I was very happy he did.
I had a thought, this was a big house, wouldn’t that mean that other people lived here? Maybe Daniel lived here with his friends, or with his wife. If he had a wife, I wanted to ask, but I wasn’t sure. If he lived with other people I’m sure they would have come downstairs to see him, so I assumed he lived alone. He finished his omelette shortly after mine, and he took our plates into the kitchen, coming back with a little bit of a tired face.
“Alright, Garrel, I’ve gotta go and make some phone calls, do you think you can be good for about 30 minutes?” I wasn’t sure how long 30 minutes was, but I nodded anyway. Thirty was a big number, but I’d be fine to wait. I saw a bookshelf, so I thought I’d try to read some of the books he had. He smiled at me when I nodded and walked up the stairs, so I went on over to the bookshelf.
There were two books I saw that looked really cool, there was one called “Daybreak” and one called “Tales of Armelias.” I couldn’t read too much of it, but Daybreak was about a girl who got trapped in a dream world, and the other one had something to do with a prince going on a journey. They were complicated, so I didn’t read them for very long.
I don’t know how long I was waiting for, but it probably wasn’t thirty minutes since Daniel wasn’t back yet. I didn’t want to upset him, but I was curious about what he had to make the phone calls to. So I sneakily walked up the stairs, I think so at least, I wasn’t making any noise so I think I was sneaky. I saw a room in the upstairs hallway with the lights on, I walked close to it and peeked through the door, Daniel was sitting at a desk and had a phone to his ear.
I couldn’t hear him very well, he was being quiet, but I did hear something about ‘he’s all alone, I can’t just leave him.’ and something like: ‘do you know what they’ll do to a meta-human his age?’ I assumed he was talking about me, I was alone and I think I was a meta-human. I thought Daniel might get cross if he saw me, so I walked back downstairs and sat on the sofa. I waited for a little bit, and he came back downstairs.
“Alright, I’m all done now, Garrel.” He said. “Was there anything you wanted to talk about?” He asked me. I wanted to ask what a meta-human was, but then I’d give away that I listened to him on the phone, so I thought I’d ask him later, maybe in some more days when it might seem like I remembered it from somewhere. “You have a very big house, do other people live here too?” I asked him, this was a question I had for him and he just chuckled at me, had I made another funny joke? Grown-ups act weird.
“No, Garrel, I live alone unfortunately.” He said with a smile on his face. “I just like having a big house you know? It’s quite comfortable!” I nodded, he wasn’t wrong, it was very comfy in here. Though, I think he was going to ‘get serious’ because he sat down next to me and put his hand on my shoulder.
“Look, Garrel, I’m not sure if you have anywhere to stay.” I didn’t, I think he knew this already. “So, what would you think about staying here with me? As long as you want Garrel.” I thought for a moment, I wasn’t sure if I had any other choice, but I felt like I needed to cry. Daniel was so nice, he had no reason to, but he was anyway. He was like Margaret, he was like a parent that wasn’t really a parent. I didn’t know what to do, so I just hugged him. “I’m guessing that’s a big yes to staying with me then?” He said, all I did was nod. That’s all I needed to do, I felt like I was going to cry if I spoke, and I was also very tired.
“Well, c’mon then, let’s get you to bed, it’s late after all.” He said caringly, it was almost like he read my mind. He took my hand and guided me up the stairs, there was a little room on the left back room of the upstairs hallway, it was pretty empty, but it had a bed at least, and a nice beanbag chair in the corner, “Here.” Daniel said to me. “This is your room now, it’s a bit empty, I know, but we’ll decorate it later, whaddya say?” I nodded, a little smile came to my face. It might have been bigger, but I was too tired to care. I went to slip off my shoes, but I realised I didn’t have any on, I took them off earlier because my feet hurt. That was a bad idea.
Either way, I was too sleepy to think right, I climbed into the bed in my new room and couldn’t believe how comfy it was, it was so nice, Daniel had good taste in house stuff. “Sleep well, Garrel, you deserve it after what you did today.” Had I done anything worth sleeping over today? I suppose I walked a lot, but either way, I was too sleepy to care. I felt like I was drifting off in this soft comfy bed, Daniel flicked off the bedroom light and gently closed the door.
This was so much better than the white place, Daniel’s house was nice and didn’t have people in coats telling me what to do. And to think, if that door wasn’t open I wouldn’t be here with Daniel. I hope the other kids walked away as well, maybe they’ll find a nice man like Daniel. I felt content, this was nice. Nice to have someone to call a friend, or even a family. Was this family? Enough thinking. I’m tired, it’s time to sleep.
