Meta-humans are a sub-species of human who possess enhanced abilities afforded to them by metatanium mutations. Metatanium mutations can be present in both humans and animals, and their abilities can range from manipulation of certain forms of energy or matter, to flight, enhanced senses and strength, or other physical and mental enhancements. Normal humans, either out of fear, jealousy, or prejudice often detest and reject meta-humans, calling them "freaks", "deviants", or "bio-terrorists."
Even at the weakest levels, meta-humans are hardier than regular humans. They can take more impact trauma, more cuts from a blade, hold their breath underwater longer, and suffer less from temperature extremes. The more extreme their exposure to metatanium, the more punishment they can take. The strongest of them can even survive an otherwise fatal wound and recover within hours.
On the flipside, there exist monsters in this world that are a result of an advanced strain of metatanium mutation, hereby referred to as metatanium poisoning. Their extended exposure to the radioactive superelement turned man and beast alike into monsters who've lost all their sanity. These monsters roam wherever metatanium experiments occurred in the past, and serve as the primary opposition to peace around the globe. It is because of these monsters that meta-humans are given such poor reception in public eye, as they stem from the same origin.
While metatanium radiation is known to play a part in the expression and use of superhuman traits, there are numerous reports and rumors of meta-humans being created in a variety of ways, including genetic experimentation and contact with other meta-humans. Consequently, we do not definitively know how they are created, even today. The blood of most meta-humans seems to take on a much darker hue than normal human blood, appearing almost black in low lighting. The darker their blood, the more severe the mutation, and those with metatanium poisoning have blood that no light can illuminate.
