Name: Amani Hasan
Alias: Thundercrack
Gender: Female
Age: 16
Affiliation: Rebel
Physical Appearance:
Amani is a girl that stands at a proud 5'6", with deep olive skin, and fashion sense that has been described as both "bad" and "wrong." Her out-on-the-town clothes include a banana-yellow jacket that long ago lost its zipper, blue jeans, a faded pink dress that might have once been red, a gaudy polka-dot hijab, and mint-green sneakers with mismatched laces.
Her hair is a rich brown and boyishly short, something that could be described as a pixie cut, but it is usually hidden underneath the ugly-hijab-of-the-day. Amani is generally thin, but athletic; long, powerful legs, sturdy arms, and a physique that betrays a life of running and only moderately healthy eating. Her features are soft, with a rounded chin, wide brown eyes, and a crooked nose from an incident when she was seven in which she picked a fight with a fellow student for cutting her in the lunch line.
Personality:
A tomboy from the outset, Amani is bright and full of ideas.
Frequently seen bounding with an eager gait in her step, this girl is the very image of a go-getter adventurer eager to find their way and make their mark. She proudly boasts an outdoorsy attitude and a love for nature, which is a shame, since she lives in Shanghai. She adores being the life of the party, often striving to be the center of attention.
Mistakes and failures — things she's all too familiar with — are met with a tempered, steely resolve. Always pressing forward, Amani takes her failures in stride and makes every effort to resolve herself of her shortcomings to be the best she can be. She exudes an uncanny resolve that can be inspiring to those who see it firsthand.
The overconfidence, however, can lead to Amani acting purely upon impulse with little to no information. The habit has sunk her into trouble on more than one occasion, and although many may interpret it as a fault, she sees it as a boon and, consequentially, has not attempted to rectify that particular trait about herself.
Amani is an idealist, above all things else, and it is her firmest belief that what's "right" and what's "legal" are two entirely different things, thus leading to her handful of misdemeanors.
History:
Hailing from a post-metatanium Afghanistan, Amani's parents grew up accustomed to blistering heat, living in a state of perpetual squalor, and the difficulties of attempting to live a life of merely scraping by.
It was clear that, when the mother became pregnant, the duo had to find someplace safer for their daughter to grow. Between the United States invasion of Afghanistan (both for oil and metatanium) and the increasing tensions in the Middle East, it was decided that it would be best to leave.
Where?
Anywhere else.
And so, raised in as Muslim household in Shanghai, Amani was taught that there was nothing more important than protecting the people she loved. Keeping the company of other meta-humans in Shanghai's denser apartments, a young, impressionable Amani heard countless tales of wannabe rebels and the truth behind the establishment of China's Superstar business, filling her head with dreams of her own personal glory and service to the world.
Inspired, the young girl's already outgoing and determined personality became that much more so. Amani was adamant to pave the way for a better future, to raise awareness of the imbalance in China's society, and though her parents don't agree with their daughter's ideals or methods, they figured that this phase of hers would pass, and so they distantly encourage their daughter's ideals. If her parents not create a better life for their daughter, then maybe Amani could create a better life for her own.
Amani grew in a Dari-speaking household, but quickly learned to speak Chinese through the neighborhood children. While her parents' grasp of Chinese remains generally poor even today, Amani can speak mostly fluently, despite a moderate accent.
When Amani's powers first manifested, her parents were alarmed, but not surprised. While her mother had no powers to speak of, her father's ability was that of electromagnetism — that is to say, he could generate minor electric fields and levitate silverware while he worked in the kitchen. So, when it became apparent that their frequent power-outages weren't the result of their provider and was instead their daughter, their first priority was to try and teach the eight year-old Amani how to use her powers as infrequently as possible, due to its destructive nature.
With her parents and their support, Amani gained an excellent grasp of her mutation's lower limits — with an ability such as hers, thunder generation, her "lower limit" is still quite loud and quite destructive. She has yet to find her higher limit, and that frightened her parents.
When rebels became more active all over China, Amani took to her own tasks with aplomb. The art of causing trouble came to her as naturally as breathing, and what might be interpreted as teenage rebellion was scarcely more than her own blend of activism. She quickly learned how to protest and where to do it, which of China's public servants were only interested in keeping the status quo, how to raise awareness, and, when all else failed, how to run and how to hide.
So far, her crimes remained minor. But there's no telling the lengths she'll go to be noticed...
Power:
Thundercrack — Amani's mutation allows her to conduct electricity from her body and her surroundings. She uses that electric charge to superheat the air to create powerful sonic booms. The more charge that Amani has built up, the stronger her thunder becomes.
She usually uses small, powerful shockwaves from her hands to not only blast her opponents, but to propel herself and navigate through the air as well. The blasts are powerful enough to send Amani flying at her opponents without much time for them to react, and she can use them swiftly enough to evade incoming attacks, sometimes.
Also, her parents' electric bill has never been lower. Everyone else in the neighborhood, though...
Drawbacks:
Amani's greatest drawback is the repercussions of exposing her hands to such intense heat at all, let alone for extended periods of time. Her hands are criss-crossed with burns and callouses from overuse of her power, and she has since learned to wear gloves.
She is hard of hearing due to the nature of her sonic booms, and she doesn't wear hearing aids due to the risk of frying them with her own power. Instead, she wears earmuffs when in combat. This means she is practically deaf when engaged in a fight, but it certainly beats being actually deaf in her day-to-day.
She cannot naturally generate the electricity needed to use her power, and must instead charge herself from available sources of electricity. Amani can siphon electricity from almost any object connected to a power grid (lamp posts, phone booths, televisions, etc.), though she can only draw so much power into herself before she overloads and fries herself. This has happened before. It is very painful.
When Amani draws electricity into herself, she practically turns into one giant electromagnet. When roaming the city with a large amount of charge, small trinkets find themselves inexplicably tugged towards her — it's a dead giveaway whenever she needs to lay low. Since her power is so loud and destructive, it's hard to "lay low" anyways.
Amani cannot enter water when she has a charge built up, else she risks straight-up electrocuting herself. She must discharge all of her built-up energy before she can enter the shower — it's a total hassle. Her parents had to install a lightning rod for their daughter to discharge power into.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
+This is a girl that is so determined to do "the right thing," that nothing can stop her. Nothing. No matter how many slaps on the wrist she takes, no matter how many embarassing calls to her parents from the police station she needs to make, Amani will never stop fighting.
-This is a double-edged sword, of course, and Amani doesn't even realize it. One day, her foolhardiness will land her in a mess that she won't be able to climb out of, despite her best efforts. Amani will keep pushing herself and pushing herself until she inevitably destroys herself.
