Name: Xiao Ningtian
Alias: Drifter
Gender: Male
Age: 19
Affiliation: Rebel
Physical Appearance:
Xiao Ningtian stands at about 5’11” with a lithe build, not at all weak looking however. He has pale skin and weary, hazel coloured eyes. His hair is of a black colour and is a shaggy mess to say the least, looking as if he doesn’t really comb it, let alone even so much as touch it after having woken up from a nap. On top of being relatively long-ish, sitting around his shoulders, if not a bit longer. His eyes appear to be half-shut practically all the time, on top of usually being slightly bloodshot and baggy.
Clothing is something he doesn’t care much about. But, as for casual wear, in most cases he’ll be wearing either pajamas or some variety of hoodie or jacket with baggy trousers. Though, his ‘Drifter’ outfit is quite a stark contrast, consisting of a long, flowing black shawl that conceals most of his body, paired with trousers of the same colour and a sleeveless top beneath the shawl, once again of the same colour. However, contrasting this is a goat-skull mask of an ashen grey colour that fully conceals his face,, a small light in each of the eyeholes that can be turned on and off at will.
Personality:
On both a surface and interior level, Drifter is an incredibly relaxed, and mellow person (not entirely by choice). Always being willing to hear people speak their mind, as well as always doing the very same himself.
Speaking of other people, Drifter is the type of person who loves spending time with those he considers friends. And seeing as he thinks of every moment he spends awake to be precious, he sees time with his friends to be amongst the most precious. As such, he tries his best to be a good friend, and will often be wanting to do things with his friends. Whether that’s watching a movie, playing a game or just relaxing. He hates being alone, so just having the company makes him feel better. At least with someone around he both has a reason to stay awake and something to keep him awake.
When it comes to things he cares for or is passionate about, he quite often wishes to try his hardest at the very least. Though, most other things he will display an obvious level of indifference. Not caring much unless it’s absolutely necessary, and in most cases he’ll show this apathetic side to himself, too tired to bother. Not entirely his choice, but a set of habits and a trait he’s developed nonetheless.
Beneath this apathetic, half-asleep surface however lies a caring, and kind-hearted person driven by his ideals of fairness. Although he spends most of his time asleep, he does what he can to improve the lives of those around him, both through simple gestures or otherwise. Trying to make up for lost time, if anything. Doing so through selflessness for those he cares for.
History:
At the foot of it all, Xiao Ningtian was an ordinary kid. He was born to well off parents with an older and younger sibling to boot, he attended school and tried his best to make friends. But, this wasn’t the life fate had in store for him.
Metatanium had other plans.
Due to the issues his mutation brought on, he found a number of things incredibly difficult and another number of things outright impossible, simply due to being too tired to do them, or unable to stay awake long enough to do them either. This applied especially to his schooling, where his grades began to suffer.
Socialising amongst other things was tough, not to mention he couldn’t keep himself awake to study. Hobbies were barely able to be kept up, and he had accumulated a number of bumps of bruises from the times he’s fallen over, all in all, his quality of life dropped considerably because of this.
Every aspiration he had for his future slowly began to fade off into a dream, disappearing as suddenly as they’d come about, and there was nothing he could do about it. But, this left another concern in his mind. Nobody was doing anything to help him either.
He very narrowly made it through school, having to constantly fight the sleepiness clawing at his consciousness, his hopes for future careers was all but gone at this point and he couldn’t help but feel a sense of anger. Though he couldn’t blame others for the issues he’d endured, that rather being an unfortunate product of genetics. However, never once had anyone made an effort to adjust to his unfortunate circumstances.
Let alone the circumstances of others, actually. The way he saw it, people’s mutations were treated as a commodity more than anything. Something used for entertainment, not as the things that set people apart from others.
And he couldn’t stand it.
The path of being a rebel enticed him, they fought for what they believed in, for what they thought was right. The only way he could make a difference was to rebel against the system as a number of others had.
So he stands today, under the alias of Drifter, willing to do whatever it takes to make a change in the world. He wasn’t going to let people like him suffer any longer, victims of disadvantages out of their control.
Power:
Sleepytime Residue: Xiao Ningtian’s entire body secretes a thin residue which, upon skin contact with it, will be instantly absorbed into a person’s skin and induce sleepiness and tiredness to whomever touched it. As well as causing a series of sleep induced hallucinations, namely a menagerie of blindingly colourful displays, consuming said person’s vision with swirling and spinning vibrancy. The time it lasts for and how much it affects the target will depend on how long they are touching him, but one thing to note is that it can never force someone to fall asleep with just the residue.
His entire body secretes this residue at all times, so there won’t be moments where direct contact won’t drag a person under it’s influence. Another thing to note is that this residue is most heavily concentrated in his palms, and will usually be able to bleed through most cloth to affect someone to a lesser extent if skin contact is not possible. On top of this, shaking off the effects with physical impacts or otherwise won’t work, having to wait for the residue’s effects to leave the body.
Drawback:
The biggest, most notable drawback to this power is that Xiao is not at all immune to the effects of the residue. At all. And seeing as his body is completely covered in the stuff at all times, he has a lot of trouble staying awake, having to keep himself distracted with something so as not to simply keel over and fall asleep. He can usually stay awake for about two hours after having had a proper sleep before he has to force himself to stay awake through external means. The hallucinations however affect him to a lesser extent, having lived with them his whole life, he only sees them in a minor fashion, having had built up an immunity over the years.
On top of this, for it to have any real effect on a person, the contact needs to be skin to skin, the one exception being his palms which can allow it to subtly bleed through most types of cloth. Otherwise, it is completely useless if an opponent covers up.
The drowsiness and hallucinations induced by this will usually only last an upwards of anywhere between five and fifteen minutes, based on the degree of the exposure to the residue. And as an aside, if someone has recently consumed caffeine or some kind of sleep-repelling medication, the residue will have next to no effect, unless administered through his palms, even then the effect will still be enormously dampened. Proper insomniacs are completely immune to the residues effects as well, prolonged exposure to his palms being the only exception, still having a heavily dampened, nearly nonexistent effect however.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
+An extended battle with Drifter is an uphill battle. If he gets up close and lands a few hits, he can gain a steady upper hand on an opponent. He is well adjusted to, and is nigh immune to his mutation’s hallucinations. Others aren’t.
+One of the few things that kept him awake in his younger years was martial arts. Through years of constant practice in desperate efforts to not collapse asleep, Drifter has ended up being quite a proficient martial artist. Using a homebrew style involving rapid and precise maneuvers, predominantly a variety punches and palm thrusts as well as a number of grappling maneuvers. Though this is largely improvised, so those well versed in actual martial arts will always hold an advantage. It works just enough.
+He is ironically enough a very light sleeper. It isn’t hard to wake him up, a simple shake or loud noise will do the trick.
-An obvious weakness is that he is liable to just fall asleep at any time if not kept distracted by something. It’s entirely possible if something isn’t engaging him in one way or another he’ll simply keel over and fall asleep. This will also happen completely unprovoked, more often than you’d think.
-Though he is largely immune to the hallucinogenic side of his mutation, there are of course slight hallucinations that will enter his vision. And being in a semi-lucid state a lot of the time, he’ll often get distracted by these and sort of ‘drift off’ for a moment.
-Fighting an opponent head on is a last resort for him, not quite functioning well in direct encounters. He relies quite heavily on getting the drop on people, or otherwise catching them off-guard. Suffice to say, if an opponent is prepared for his arrival, he’ll already be at a disadvantage.
