Name:
Lin Jiang (林江)
Alias:
Atrophy (毁灭: Destruction)
Gender:
Male
Age:
24
Affiliation:
Rebel
Physical Appearance:
Lin is an incredibly plain-looking individual, fitting every description of an average male pure-blooded Chinese citizen; 5'5", average build, short, straight black hair, dark brown eyes, compact nose, well-maintained teeth, a bit of stubble along his chin and an unremarkable but not unsightly jawline. Truly, the epitome of the every-man in a country of a billion. It's extremely easy to lose him in a crowd if one hasn't been paying attention to him.
His attire changes from season to season, as everyone's does, but is generally restricted to a palette of neutral-to-dark hues of grey, navy, khaki, beige, cream, black and brown.
Personality:
Even his personality is incredibly plain, with perhaps a few traits more amplified than the average person's; Lin is, after all, just another guy trying to make his way through the world, with all its pain and struggles.
He's a fan of dogs, enjoys sweet food, works hard to get by, wants to get along with everyone he meets, and goes with the flow in most situations, so long as it benefits him and everyone else he cares for to do so. He splurges on paydays (like any respectable office worker), eats out with friends on Fridays then sleeps in until noon on Saturdays, fake-calls in sick every once in a while for a free day off. Still single, he's looking for a Mrs. Liang, wants to start a family and raise kids, then grand-kids, and great-grand-kids if the world will let him.
Lin, overall, is just generally an all-round average citizen with average hopes and dreams.
The decision of joining the Rebels was a decision made in desperation, along with so many others like him; forced into near complete poverty by the civil war, Lin felt that the only way to make his situation better was to rise against authority, overturn the corrupt system, and bring order and equality back to society.
With the recent awakening of his recessive Metahuman genes, he is still unsure of what to do with his newly acquired powers or how to feel about them, but he does know one thing; he absolutely detests the Superstar organisational system, seeing the Metahumans involved as nothing but glorified symbols of oppression and selfish gain at worst, or naive and obstinately idealistic at best.
In other words, a misinformed and misjudged sense of justice in the face of overwhelming despair and desperation.
But, really, can you blame him for it?
History:
Always having been content with his lot, Lin Jiang was fine with being just another one in six billion, even from childhood. Of course, he did try his hardest not to fall down the slippery slope of apathy that comes with the knowledge of one's own insignificance, and always did his best to excel at whatever he did.
Defeat and disappointment, Lin knew, were constants in life, and he didn't let that hinder him throughout his schooling career, his years in university, and now his workplace. He had a decent amount of qualifications, a safe and well-paying desk job, and plenty of good but not amazing opportunities in store for him in the future. Politics didn't bother him much, nor the aftermath of the Metatanium scare; he just rolled onward through life, doing what humans do best; enduring.
Then, the civil war changed everything.
As the country went to hell around him, Lin tried to keep his job, a level head and an optimistic outlook, but that got harder and harder to do as the economic crash set in. Impoverished and desperate, he still soldiered on until he had nothing left; no job, no income, no residence, no nothing. Defeated yet again by life, he packed up and was about to head home to his folks and hunker down for a while...until one of his friends phoned him with some bad news.
"I'm sorry, man. Their house was bombed. Metahuman assault, the news says...I'm so sorry, Lin..."
Sinking into a depressive slump for a long while after the funeral, Lin eventually decided that the only way out was to overturn the government and bring a new society into being. He had, long ago, heard of the Rebel movement rippling through the post-war country, and decided to give it a try; after all, things couldn't get worse, could it?
Indeed, things did get better. The recession ended a little earlier than projected in Lin's part of the country, and he eventually even got his job back, though it paid significantly less than before. But Lin had already been hooked onto the Rebel mindset, and for once in his life...
"If I could only be a little selfish from now on..."
He was no longer satisfied with his lot. He wanted just that bit more, constantly. And now, with the recent awakening of his mutation, Lin began drifting from the path of complacency that had always guided him. Would he become something more than he was ever destined to be, or was fate just not going to be that kind?
"I guess it's up to me to find out."
Power:
Lin's primary mutation is the ability to physically disintegrate matter at a molecular level, capable of causing any solid matter to totally lose physical cohesion by deconstructing it into its molecular components upon contact with a localized area on his body, from his hands up to his shoulder. Any matter destroyed in this manner is reduced to a fine grey powder. Self-conducted tests have placed Lin's disintegration speeds at one cubic foot of any inorganic material a minute; a little less than a pound of matter per second.
Drawback:
Lin's disintegration is limited to only affecting inorganic matter, meaning that he cannot use his power in direct combat to damage enemies (flesh, bone, plant matter, etc. won't be affected). It should also be noted that his mutation only extends from his hands to his shoulder, limiting his range to close contact with any object he wants to see disintegrated. It goes unsaid, as well, that large objects will take very long to break down.
His ability, though usually voluntary, becomes uncontrollable and more powerful when he undergoes intense emotional stress, disintegrating everything he comes into contact with at a slightly accelerated rate whether he wants to or not. This also causes his own body to start disintegrating if his loss of control is prolonged, albeit at a much slower rate; skin begins to die and flake off after a minute, flesh starts turning to dust after five...and, if he allows his stress to continue for more than ten minutes, major tissue damage starts to occur.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Combat Tactician: Though his power isn't strictly an offensive one, Lin almost always finds a way to make it work. His fighting tactics have always been centered around the creative use of disintegration, and change often to suit different occasions.
+ Inconspicuous: Lin's looks and mannerisms are both incredibly plain, making him the perfect 'grey man' in a crowd. Even a hardened tracker would have a difficult time trying to spot him among others if he tried to make himself scarce.
+ Charismatic Every-man: Lin is a great team player, working amicably with nearly everyone he meets to complete common goals. Nobody is a stranger to him after a short while of conversation, and he generally knows how to interact with new people to form good impressions.
- Ruthless: If Lin truly sees someone as an adversary, he won't take any chances with them; every weakness is exploited, every dishonorable tactic is employed, and every opening is capitalized on until they fall, defeated or worse. Thankfully, this probably won't happen often.
- Hypocritically Desperate: Another doomed visionary thirsting for change, Lin sees the Rebel movement as as a genuine force for good, latching onto every word of propaganda he hears, and turns a blind eye conveniently to the less lawful members of the movement.
- Martially Inept: Though blessed with a powerful mutation, Lin is clueless about physical combat and relies heavily on his ability to disrupt and damage foes. If he's ever thrust into serious hand-to-hand combat, he'll probably die within the first ten seconds.
