Hong Kong, Migong District. Friday, 6:00pm: Han and Co. Consultants office.
"Aaaaand...six o'clock! Let's go, let's go!"
"Wow, it's Friday already, huh? It's been such a long week, I lost track!"
"We're clocking out? 'kay. Can't come tonight though. Sorry."
"Really, Feng? You're probably just going to game all night again...but I've also got late reports, oops."
"It's on my tab today, Lin. Just show us the way, eh?"
Sparse streaks of orange sunset filtered into the office space of Han and Co. Consultants, broken down to mere slits of light by the looming Yun and Gaochao districts above. Lin loosened his tie with a relieved sigh and pushed at the floor with his feet, propelling himself in his swivel chair to the elevator exit, calling the lift up as well as flicking off the light-switch along with it.
Getting up from his chair and nudging it back into place with a gentle backwards kick, he smiled as he felt his coworkers brush shoulders with him as they all huddled around the elevator doors, waiting for the moment the ding would sound and they'd all crowd in. As the elevator came to a halt, audible even through the doors, everyone tensed up and waited for the door to clank open. Glancing behind his shoulder, Lin took inventory of all the faces with him today.
There was Fei Hung, the proverbial 'life of the office'; brilliant mathematician Zhi Rui (who was rumored to be dating Fei); the resident coffee addict, Feng Mian; Wang Chen, who resented his extremely common name very much; organisational genius Mo Chou, and a few others that he didn't know so well, but valued nonetheless. Just as the doors opened with a grinding clunk, Lin muttered something under his breath that simply felt right to say right now. It was, however, almost totally obscured by the noisy lift.
"You know, I love you guys so much sometimes."
Then he was moving, moving, being pushed into the elevator, walking out into the building lobby, being jostled around in the bus, threading around the tight-packed Migong streets, all while laughing and talking with his companions. About halfway through, Feng, Wang and several others split off to attend to their own business, and everyone stopped to wave them off until the rush hour crowd blotted them from sight.
Later, checking his watch, Lin noted that they'd already been on the move for the better half of an hour. Thinking of remarking about how slow the traffic was today, Lin turned to Mo, but instead gave a triumphant 'Aha!' as he saw that they had just arrived at their destination.
"Turn to your left, ladies and gentlemen! I present to you...Van's Noodle Stop!"
After nodding one by one and making observations about how the store looked today, Lin's little troupe stepped inside to a fortunately mostly empty store, picked a table and drew straws for who was to make the order. Fei drew the shortest, and after a quick talk with the waiter, everyone had a steaming hot bowl of ramen set in front of them. Lin held up a hand before anyone could dig in, however.
"Wait up! Everyone, gather round, I've gotta take this pic first...say 'payday', people!"
"Payday!"
